Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Scholarship Loan Applications for Emergency Funding

Application Procedures

  1. Submit the required documents to the university
  2. Apply directly to JASSO online

Applications for scholarship loans are accepted if there is an urgent need due to a sudden change of circumstances in the household's income provider, e.g. unemployment, personal bankruptcy, company bankruptcy, illness or death, or to a sudden change to the household financial situation from natural disasters, e.g. fire, storms, or floods. (However, the application must be made within 12 months of the incident.) Please contact the Scholarship Section of the Student Support Division (Administration Office Building, 1st floor, Counter 7).

1. Emergency Applications (Category 1 Loans)

(1) Scholarship Loan Period Start Date
From any month after the month of the change in the applicant's financial situation (for new students, after the month in which they enroll).


From the start date indicated above to the end of the year of application (March 2012). However, the loan period may be extended until the end of the standard duration of degree completion if the applicant re-applies in December for the following year's Emergency Applications (Category 1 Loans).

2. Temporary Applications (Category 2 Loans)

(1) Scholarship Loan Period Start Date
From any month after April 2013. However, this may be extended back to the month of the change in the applicant's financial situation (for new students, to the month in which they enroll).

(2) Scholarship Loan Period
From the loan period start date to the end of the standard duration of degree completion.

Applicants from an area designated for disaster relief will be nominated by the University to JASSO. In order to apply, documentary evidence of being affected the disaster such as a copy of a disaster victim certificate is necessary.

For students whose homes were equally affected but are not directly in areas designated for disaster relief will receive equal treatment. The same applies for students whose household's income provider worked in an area designated for disaster relief, and whose place of employment was affected.
