Applications for the 2013 Japan Student Services Organization
Student of the Year award
(Senior Division students at the College of Arts and Sciences)

The JASSO Student of the Year award is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in each of the categories of academic achievement, culture and arts, sports, and public service, and who are also experiencing financial difficulty. Established from public donations, the award aims to support and encourage the development of promising future leaders of the 21st century.
 

Eligibility

Students who have been registered as an undergraduate of the University for more than 3 years as of 1st April 2013, and who are in receipt of a JASSO scholarship or fulfil the requirements to be recommended for a Category 2 Scholarship.
Students who are not eligible include international students, students who have been enrolled for longer than the normal program duration (excluding periods of Leave of Absence; students with extenuating circumstances such as illness or study abroad may still be eligible to apply), and students who do not fulfil the requirements to be recommended for a Category 2 Scholarship.
 

Application Categories: Students must fall under one of the following categories in terms of their achievements during their time at the university.

A. Academic (either 1 or 2):

1) Students recognised for excellence in presentations at national or international level conferences etc.; or
2) Students recognised for excellence in publications at national or international level journals etc.
For research conducted in collaboration, the above conditions will only apply to 1) the first presenter and 2) the first author.

B. Culture and Arts (either 1 or 2):

1) Students who win a prize in an international competition etc. or achieve an equivalent result; or
2) Students who achieve an outstanding result (highest or runner-up) in a prestigious national competition etc.
For activities conducted in a group, the above conditions will only apply to the student who played the most central role in the group achievement.

C. Sports (either 1 or 2):

1) Students who achieve an excellent result in the Olympics or other international sports competitions etc.; or
2) Students who achieve an outstanding result (highest or runner-up) in the National Sports Festival of Japan or other national sports competitions etc.
For group sports etc., the above conditions will only apply to the student who played the most central role in the group achievement.

D. Public service

1) Students who have made an outstanding public contribution through a systematic and continuous activity of their own initiative such as voluntary work (excluding activities with specific political, religious, or for-profit purposes), and who possess a good academic record (ranks within the top third of their Faculty or Department);
and
2) Students recognised by governmental or non-governmental public organizations for their outstanding public contribution; or
3) Students recognised by newspapers or magazines etc for their outstanding public contribution; or
4) Students recognised by their University President as having made an outstanding public contribution deemed equivalent to 2 and 3 above.
For group activities, the above conditions will only apply to the student who played the most central role in the group achievement.
 

Prize value

1st Prize: 500,000 yen
2nd Prize: 300,000 yen
3rd Prize: 100,000 yen

Applications by post, or late applications, cannot be accepted.


*Applications from students outside the College of Arts and Sciences can be made at the Hongo Campus. For more details, please contact the Scholarship team , Student Support and Welfare Group (Tel: 03-5841-2520).

*Information submitted with the application will only be used in relation to the award, and will not be used for any other purpose. However, winners of the award may have some of their information on the application form such as their photograph, name, university name, course of study, year of study, etc. used for publicity purposes of the award on the JASSO website or on official publications.
