Asian and Japanese Area Studies

Asian and Japanese Area Studies
A regular market in China
In this course, students seek to understand the present situation of contemporary Asia - in particular, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia and Central Asia - focusing on the historical depth and connection with Japan of these areas working closely with the Korean Studies course.

The main characteristic of the course is the unique worldview in which these countries are studied, which goes far beyond national borders. The breadth of the target area, the sheer number of the target population and the diversity of political, economical, linguistic and cultural systems considered makes this course more than 'just' one of the nine Area Studies programs offered by this department. Students are expected to acquire a perspective that can both appreciate one country in great depth and understand its relations with neighbouring countries and areas.
