The objective of this course is study of the German-speaking world from various perspectives. While a focus is placed on the history, politics, thought and culture of modern and contemporary Germany in addition to early modern German history and thought, students are free to select a research topic according to their own interests. Since classes are kept small at approximately three students per grade, student interaction also across grades is strong and the student-teacher relationship is close. Our graduates typically go on to pursue various career paths ranging from financial institutions and manufacturing companies to civil servant professions. Since acquisition of German language skills forms the foundation for research in this field, multiple programs and opportunities are offered to this end. Almost every year, students are sent to study abroad at the University of Munich or Humboldt University in Berlin. The graduation thesis will be written in German. However, since Japanese and German professors join in offering thesis guidance, there is no need to worry about language proficiency in this regard.

Subjects of recent graduation theses
The security policy of Germany / Right-wing extremism in East-Germany / Fatih Akin and his world / Joint history textbooks in Germany and France / The German position on the right to self-determination of Slovenia and Croatia / Extended producer responsibility of Japan and Germany / Walter Benjamin's "Epistemo-Critical Prologue" / etc.
