Earth System and Energy Sciences Course

In this course, students will acquire system theory thinking using the mathematical sciences as a foundation. The course will allow students to acquire both a highly specialised knowledge base and a wide perspective in areas including the movements and structures of the universe and solar system, the formation of the earth, atmospheric sciences, properties of environmental chemicals, ecologies that form the foundations of biodiversity, evolution, renewable energy, and environmental energy policies. For this, students must study the fundamental sciences: environmental sciences, to understand materials and energy cycles; earth and space sciences, to understand the structure of the universe and solar system, the formation and history of the earth, and atmospheric and ocean circulation; and ecology, phylogenetics and evolutionary sciences, to understand the biodiversity that forms the foundations of the global environment. Students must also attain a solid level of mathematical understanding and IT skills to aid their learning. The aim of this course is to foster students who can draw on their wide knowledge and skills base to tackle highly complex and interdisciplinary problems.

In addition to the compulsory courses above, students may also take courses from other areas of study according to their interests. The following courses are also required in order to allow students to gain fundamental practical skills:

- Experiments in Information and Environmental Sciences (3-part experiment)
- Fieldwork for Global System Sciences
- Seminar in Mathematics (2-part seminar)

For their graduation project, students will be assigned to a lab for one year, and will use the expertise they have gained on the course to conduct their own research and write up a graduation thesis.
