Geography and Design Sciences

Many serious problems of modern society - urban/rural problems, development and the environment, land use reorganisation and regional societies, local economies and international division of labor, the ageing society and living environment - all take place within specific environments that are tightly intertwined with its geographical background, including its historical and biological environment. In this course, we aim to systematically consider such issues from the perspectives of societal constraints on space, and the simultaneous societal needs on the building or restructuring of space. Taking geographical and spatial sciences as a base, we equip students with fundamental skills in research and analysis such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), fieldwork and spatial design. In doing so, we aim to develop future practitioners who will be capable of devising practical and flexible applications in planning and policy.

An outstanding feature of this course is the mandatory fieldwork at selected sites within the country, once as a prospective student and once during third year. The fieldwork is an invaluable opportunity to learn how to construct a regional investigation process from pre-planning to report compilation, but also to learn first-hand about the variety of problems that face modern society. We also place importance on the graduation thesis, in which the student will choose their own topic, analyse their fieldwork results or primary data, and refine their practical research skills.
