Matter and Materials Science

This course aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of materials science from the micro to the macro, in order to promote further development of a discipline that underpins modern science and technology. Students learn the basic principles of physics behind quantum and statistical mechanics, as well as the fundamental concepts and methodologies of molecular chemistry behind molecular design and quantum chemistry. In so doing, the course lays a foundation for further work in the wider materials and biological sciences. A particular feature of this course is its integrated approach to learning: together with the study of basic concepts in physics and chemistry, students can also choose courses according to their preferences and are not restricted by disciplinary boundaries. From the fifth semester onwards, the program offers compulsory courses in experimental basic sciences so that students can receive hands-on training in the most fundamental and important experiments in physics and chemistry. In addition, Seminars in Matter and Materials Science is also offered as a compulsory course and features small-group discussion sessions for the effective study of current trends in the basic sciences.
