Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences

This course allows students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms and foundation of human behaviours, cognitive functions and mental activities from the view of development and adaptation. The course is approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing topics such as perception, learning, thought, memory, reasoning, judgment, decision-making and exercise. We take an equal number of students from the arts and the sciences, and provide detailed guidance and a rich learning environment such that all students, regardless of the level of scientific background, can naturally understand the principles behind experimental psychology. By encouraging interaction between the humanities and social sciences with the natural sciences, we teach students to become 21st century specialists in the 'science of the heart', who are trained in both the basics of experimental psychology as well as the ability to understand humans and modern society. Our approach is unique compared to other departments of psychology in that we focus on the interactions with the Life Sciences and the Sports Sciences. Our main research areas include Evolutionary Cognitive Science, Clinical Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuroethology, and Psychophysics. Lectures are given not only on these topics, but also on various other areas of the cognitive and behavioral sciences such as Cognitive Development and Social Psychology.

Course subjects include various options on the functions and mechanisms of human cognitive processes from multiple perspectives such as clinical psychology, personality, and social psychology, while lectures and seminars will allow students to present and discuss various issues in cognitive and behavioural sciences and contemporary society. Compulsory courses include Principles of Research, Methodology, and Experimental Methods I and II, which allow students to experience the principles and knowledge of cutting-edge psychological research methods in small classroom settings throughout the year. In the 7th and 8th semesters, students will complete a Special Research Project and a Graduation Project respectively in an area of Cognitive and Behavioural Sciences, under the guidance of an academic advisor.

Additionally, students may enroll in courses offered from other departments and faculties, such as the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Course and the Sports Sciences Sub-course, as well as related courses in cognitive neuroscience and welfare psychology from the joint programs of Evolutionary Cognitive Neuroscience and Barrier-Free Studies, The broad range of options encourages each student to create a personalized course that is tailored to his or her own interests and ambitions.
