International Relations Interdisciplinary Social Sciences

Interdisciplinary Social Sciences

Today, the social sciences exist as a synthesis, comprised of a variety of fields such as law, politics, economics, statistics, history of social thought, and sociology. Whilst giving due acknowledgement to their individual autonomy, the course in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences seeks to cut across these different fields in order to unravel a variety of social phenomena in a comprehensive way, addressing both their theoretical, ideological dimensions and their empirical, quantitative dimensions. In the increasingly complex society of today, it is no longer possible to fully capture a particular social phenomenon through the lens of one discipline alone. Investigating a phenomenon from multiple perspectives, building a comprehensive understanding by studying it in relation to other phenomena, and foreseeing the society to come from a globalised perspective - with a focus on developing such skills, ever since its inauguration in 1983 as the Department of Social Relations at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, this course has produced a large number of graduates who have gone on to undertake leading roles within universities and research institutes, as well as government offices and businesses.
