Culture and Representation

'Culture and Representation' is a new disciplinary field that was inaugurated in 1986 as a department at the Komaba Campus. Graduate level courses have been offered since 1989. Over the years, the department has endeavoured to take a fresh approach to all sorts of cultural phenomena, including various kinds of art from the viewpoint of the analysis of 'representation'. In addition to general research and educational activities, we have been organizing many symposiums, performances, lectures, seminars, and other events, all with the aim of building a practical bridge between university-level research and the actual creation of art and culture in society. In this way, we have continually been a driving force in vitalizing the platform of 'knowledge' in contemporary Japan. In recent years, courses and lectures on 'Culture and Representation' have been established at other universities all over Japan, and in 2005 the 'Association for Studies of Culture and Representation' was founded. 'Culture and Representation' has become fully established as a pioneering field in the Japanese intellectual landscape, and is increasingly strengthening its presence. We are looking forward to welcoming students who may be seeking to go beyond the existing methodologies of disciplines, who may be proficient in multiple languages, or who may be aspiring to gain not 'broad but shallow, but 'broad and deep' knowledge.
