《Division for Environment, Health and Safety》Beware of Crow Attacks

May and June are the nesting season for crows and ravens. Until July, when nestlings leave their nest, crows become highly defensive and aggressive. If you are near a nest or fledgling, you may be attacked unexpectedly.
Please be aware of crow’s aggressive behavior and act accordingly as noted below. If you do find yourself being threatened or attacked by a crow, please contact the Division for Environment, Health and Safety.

Patterns of Attack
Usually, crows strike the head from behind with their talons. It is rare to have crows attack with their beaks. If a crow charges straight towards its target, the blow can be very strong.

How to Protect Yourself
1. Pay Attention to Cawing
Crows attack perceived threats to protect their nest and nestlings. Vocalized threats precede attacks. Recognize cawing as a sign of warning and do not dismiss it
as casual crying.
2. Never Show your Back
If cawed, do not take your eyes off the crow. Try to leave the area without turning your back. Crows do not pursue threats that have left their territory.
3. Protect your Head
Hats and umbrellas can be effective protection.
