【Deadline: July 8 (Wed)】(UNU-IAS: UNU Intensive Core Courses)

UNU-IAS organises UNU Intensive Core (IC) Courses focusing on the sustainability,
global change and international development project in September 2026. 
These courses are designed to provide analyses of global issues from both theoretical 
and empirical perspectives. Although advanced in nature, they are open to 
postgraduate students and professionals in various occupations who are not 
necessarily specialists in the field. 
One course consists of fifteen 100-minute lectures. 

Duration: 2-29 September 2026
Modality: Course 1 & 2 : UNU-HQ, Tokyo (On-site Only)
*No online streaming is planned.
Course 3 : UNU-HQ, Tokyo & online
*Student from partner universities attend the lectures on-site if the lecturers provide lectures on-site at UNU-HQ. If the lectures are delivered online, applicant should join on-line so students are expected to have the access to a laptop or computer, with a reliable internet connection of high-speed broadband for the optimal learning experience by using Zoom.

Courses

1. UN System and Sustainable Development:
The 17 SDGs are integrated. Action in one area will affect outcomes in others. Development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. At the same time, the 5 Ps of the SDGs are often emphasized: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership.   
In this course, we focus on People, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership (Planet are the focus of another UNU-IC course, Global Change and Planetary Boundaries). For the topics of this course, several SDGs are selected, and within each Goal, several Targets will be chosen for discussion.

2. Global Change and Planetary Boundaries:
Among the five "P"s emphasised in the SDGs, this course primarily covers on planet, prosperity, and partnership to analyse current issues and examine necessary actions to achieve the SDGs.

3. Principles of International Development Project:
This course has two sections: lectures and group work. In the lecture series, you can learn about the core issues of developing countries, project evaluation methods, relationships between engineering and international development, applications of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to preserve world heritage sites, development and natural disasters, global urban climatology, and education in the context of international development, and the case of an international plant construction project. The group work session aims to develop a proposal for an international development project. Suppose you are an expert consultant on a project, and it has been requested that you recommend development policies and projects to politicians and/or economic leaders in a developing country.

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies on Sustainability (UNU-IAS) will select participants for the course.
If you have to cancel your course registration, please contact the PEAK/GPEAK Section as soon as possible (registration cannot be cancelled after September).
There is no course fee for students from partner institutions.
