Consultation and Procedures Related to Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity (Available for LGBTQ+ Students)

1 Procedures

Various kinds of consultations may require special consideration and/or personal support. If you wish to talk about matters other than those listed below, please visit the consultation center.

(1) Requesting use of alias

If students with gender dysphoria wish to use an alias at UTokyo, please contact the Center for Research on Counseling and Support Services or the administrative section of your affiliated department.

(2) Changing the gender written on the student register

When students change the gender written on their family register, they should submit the documents to certify the change to the administrative office of their faculty.

(3) Medical check-ups

In principle, medical check-ups for students are performed on different days by gender. If students wish to undergo medical check-up individually because of gender dysphoria, please consult with the health center.

(4) Restrooms

The university's campuses have multipurpose restrooms available to anyone to use regardless of gender.

(5) Lockers

The Komaba Campus has lockers available for all genders. Please ask the Student Council of the College of Arts and Sciences before use.

2 Consultation and Peer Support

Currently, UTokyo has no official counseling center that specializes in gender and sexuality issues. However, students can discuss their concerns including those on gender and sexuality at the following offices.

(1) Student Counseling Center

The Student Counseling Center provides various kinds of advice on any concerns students may have during their school life. Feel free to talk about anything. The professional counselor, a clinical psychologist, will talk with you about your concerns, including those on gender and sexuality.

(2) Office for Mental Health Support

The Office for Mental Health Support helps students and staff at UTokyo continue their personal and academic lives with a healthy mind. All visits to the Office for Mental Health Support require an appointment in advance. Psychiatrists are not specialists in matters of gender and sexuality, however, they will discuss issues related to gender and sexuality, as well as other mental health issues. They can also introduce you to more specialized institutions.

(3) Harassment Counseling Center

The Harassment Counseling Center offers counseling services for various harassment related issues, such as sexual or academic harassment.

It is available for students, academic and administrative staff members, and their families, as well as to their friends or academic advisers. Your privacy is completely protected and a counselor considers how problems can be solved together. Please feel free to contact us even if you are not sure whether a problem can be solved with our assistance.

(4) Komaba campus Safer Space (KOSS)

KOSS is a peer-support and mutual-learning space for women and queer people on campus. You could come and talk to student advisers or with each other on various issues you encounter on and off campus regarding genders, sexualities, disabilities, etc. We're on the ground floor of the bldg. 102. You can see the rainbow flag on our window from outside. Please check our twitter for more info. @koss_ut
