1949/5/31 The University of Tokyo was established under a new system
(By Section #150 of the National School Establishment Law).
Establishment of the College of Arts and Sciences.
First Higher School and Tokyo High School were incorporated into the University of Tokyo.
1949/6/8~10 First Entrance Examinations held (8 694 examinees).
1949/7/7 First Entrance Ceremony (1 804 new entrants, of which 9 were women).
1949/7/8 College of Arts and Sciences lectures began (regular teaching commenced from September).
1950/3/31 First Higher School closed.
1951/3/31 Tokyo High School closed.
1951/4/1 Department of Liberal Arts established.
1951/7/10 College of Arts and Sciences regulations enacted.
1952/6 Former First Higher School nurse’s room converted into the College of Arts and Sciences Student Health Center.
1953/3/28 First graduation ceremony for the University of Tokyo under the new system held (with 51 graduates from the Department of Liberal Arts).
1953/4/20 College of Arts and Sciences Student Consultation Office opened.
1953/5/29 Management of Mitaka Dormitory land and buildings transferred from the Ministry of Finance to the University of Tokyo.
1962/4/1 Department of Pure and Applied Sciences established.
1964/4/1 University administration organized into divisions of General Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs.
1965/7/11 Komaba-Todaimae Station on the Inokashira line opened after the merger of Komaba and Todaimae stations,
1967/1/1 University of Tokyo Health Center established. With this, the College of Arts and Sciences Student Health Center became the University of Tokyo Health Center, Komaba Branch.
1967/6/1 Center for American Studies established.
1975/4/1 Library Division established in the Administration Department.
1977/4/1 Department of Liberal Arts reorganized into three divisions (Department of Liberal Arts 1, Department of Liberal Arts 2, and Department of Liberal Arts 3).
1979/7/7 Celebrations held to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the foundation of the College of Arts and Sciences.
“Thirty Years of the College of Arts and Sciences” published.
1981/4/1 Department of Pure and Applied Sciences reorganized into two divisions (Department of Pure and Applied Sciences 1, and Department of Pure and Applied Sciences 2); Accounting Division established in the Administration Department.
1983/4/1 Graduate School of Arts and Sciences established.
1987/4/1 Educational Computing Center, Komaba Branch, established.
1989/7/7 Celebrations held to commemorate the 40 year anniversary of the foundation of the College of Arts and Sciences.
“College of Arts and Sciences, 40th Anniversary: 1949-1989” published.
1989/10/1 Academic Counseling Office reorganized; Academic Guidance Center established.
1992/4/1 Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences established.
1993/4/1 Department of Language and Information Sciences established; junior division program prioritized and new curriculum implemented.
1993/6/1 University of Tokyo Mitaka International Student Dormitory opened; Komaba Dormitory closed.
1994/4/1 Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences-Life Sciences established; beginning of reorganization and prioritization of the Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences-Basic Science, Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences-General Systems Studies.
1995/4/1 Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences-Basic Science and Department of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences-General Systems Studies prioritized.
1996/4/1 Department of Comparative Literature and Culture, Department of Cultural Anthropology, and Department of Culture and Representation reorganized, prioritized, and incorporated into the Department of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies.
Department of Social Relations, Department of International Relations reorganized, prioritized, and incorporated into the Department of Advanced Social and International Studies; Department of Area Studies reorganized and prioritized.
The above changes concluded the reorganization of the priorities of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
Department of Liberal Arts 1, Department of Liberal Arts 2, and Department of Liberal Arts 3 as well as Department of Pure and Applied Sciences 1, and Department of Pure and Applied Sciences 2 reorganized into the Department of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Department of Area Studies, Department of Social and International Relations, Department of Basic Science, Department of General Systems Studies and Department of Life and Cognitive Sciences.
1999/4/1 Educational Computing Center, Komaba Branch reorganized into the Information Technology Center.
2000/4/1 Center for American Studies reorganized into the Center for Pacific and American Studies.
2000/11/11 Symposium held to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the foundation of the College of Arts and Sciences.
2001/12 “Fifty Years at Komaba: 1949-2000” published.
2002/10/2 College of Arts and Sciences Library and Building 8 Library merged and reopened as Komaba Library
2004/4/1 Following revisions to national law, the University of Tokyo was converted to the University of Tokyo Incorporated Educational Institution.
2005/4/1 Liberal Arts Education Development Institute established.
2006/4/1 New junior division curriculum implemented.
Komaba Community Plaza North Building opened.
2006/7/1 University administration reorganized.
2006/10/1 Komaba Community Plaza opened (all buildings).
2009/3~10 Symposium, museum special exhibition, Tokyo Komaba Firelight Noh Drama performance and other activities held to commemorate the 60 year anniversary of the foundation of the College of Arts and Sciences.
2010/4/1 Komaba Organization for Educational Excellence and Institute for Advanced Global Studies established.
2011/4/1 Senior division reorganized into the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (subdivided into Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Area Studies, Social and International Relations), Department of Interdisciplinary Sciences (subdivided into the four courses of Science and Technology Studies, Geography and Spatial Design, Informatics, Earth System and Energy Sciences), Department of Integrated Sciences (Mathematical Sciences, Matter and Materials Science, Integrated Life Sciences, Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences courses as well as a Sports Science sub-course).
2011/5/27 21 KOMCEE (Komaba Center for Educational Excellence) west construction completed.
2012/4 Organization for Program on Environmental Sciences established.
2012/10 Undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered in English ? Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK), Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences (GPES), and Graduate Program on Global Society (GSP) ? established.
2013/4 Organization for Global Japanese Studies established.
2014/6 21 Komaba Center for Educational Excellence East opened.
2015/8/19 Komaba International Building for Education and Research opend
