"Human colonization of oceanic islands in prehistory: Inter-ocean comparisons"

Dr. Geoffrey Clark (College of Asia and the Pacific, The Australian National University)

When: November 12th, 2015 14:55-16:40

Where: : 21KOMCEE East B1F K011

Abstract: Oceanic islands, defined as landmasses 250 km from continental margins, are among the most difficult environments for human settlement as their colonization required a developed maritime technology and often adaptation to remote and isolated environments that were very different from those that migrants left. Why did people seek out distant islands, what impact did they have on the pristine ecosystems they found, and what can patterns of oceanic migration tell us about human mobility and dispersal? I examine these issues by considering recent archaeological and palaeoenvironmental evidence for human arrival on islands in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean and consider why patterns of oceanic colonization differ so substantially from one another.
