Informatics

With the remarkable development of information technology, there is now an urgent need to generate or extract information efficiently, safely and seamlessly from an enormous amount and variety of sources - and in doing so, ensure our security, well-being, and the continued progress of human civilisation. As such, the development of IT-literate individuals who can analyze, create, transmit and judge the value of information across all natural, cultural, economic and social phenomena is an important responsibility of higher education. In response to this demand, this interdisciplinary course in Informatics has been created to encompass all facets of information technology, even ranging to the cultural arts, with the aim of developing future leaders across a variety of fields.

To achieve such aims in research and education, this course is taught by experts across a wide range of IT-related disciplines including computing systems architecture and communication networks; software and programming languages; information theory and discrete mathematics; natural language processing; artificial intelligence; cognitive science; image processing; CG art; media theory and information culture theory; and informational economics. An outstanding feature of this course is the inclusion of staff from other affiliated faculties in order to promote its interdisciplinary nature, including staff from the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the Information Technology Center, and the Department of Liberal Arts at the College of Arts and Sciences.
