British Area Studies

In this course, students conduct research on the Anglophone world with the British archipelago at the centre. Employing a variety of disciplines from history, literature and philosophy to politics and economics, the course takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the regional characteristics.

By investigating the target region from multiple viewpoints in this way, students are encouraged to develop a broad perspective built on profound insights. As a policy, the department places much importance on language proficiency, and puts this into practice, not only by requiring students to write their graduation thesis in English, but also by organising two mid-thesis presentations and conducting the graduation thesis viva all in English. Many of our students also study abroad through the AIKOM Program. In this way, students are trained to become highly cultivated individuals who have the flexibility and imagination to think across disciplines, and possess a critical mind and a high language proficiency. Equipped with such a skill set, our students have a range of career options upon graduation. Graduate destinations vary widely from the civil service to trading companies, and those pursuing further study go on to a variety of graduate schools, including not only our Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, but also universities abroad.
