European Studies Program (ESP)

Program Aims

Through the on-going process of European integration, in its political, economic and social dimensions, Europe today continues to undergo profound changes. The European Studies Program (ESP) is designed to equip students with robust knowledge and cutting-edge methodologies in European studies, with the goal of educating insightful future leaders who can act as a bridge between Europe and Japan in various fields of society.

Governing Bodies

The program was established in April 2005 in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo. In April 2010, the existing Center for German and European Studies (DESK) was reorganized to become part of the new Institute for Advanced Global Studies (IAGS). The European Studies Program is being coordinated in partnership with other graduate schools and research institutes at the Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo.

Eligibility and Degree Awarded

Students belonging to the following four departments in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences can register for this program: Language and Information Sciences, Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Area Studies, Advanced Social and International Studies. Students who complete the program requirements will be awarded an M.A. in European Studies - the first degree of this kind in Japan

Overseas Seminar

The European Studies Program (ESP) also offers an overseas fall seminar, the European Fall Academy (EFA). It is a 12-day seminar that has been held since 2007, and is held in Otzenhausen, Germany at the European Academy (EA). The seminar is held through the cooperation of the ASKO Europe foundation in Sarrebruck, Trier University, the European Academy, and the Center for German and European Studies.

Paths after graduation

Graduates of this program are expected to acts as a bridge between Europe and Japan in various careers. However, many students choose to go on to Ph.D. programs in their respective departments, thereby pursuing the road to becoming a researcher.
