The University of Tokyo Center for Middle Eastern Studies (UTCMES) was established in April 2011 within the Institute of Advanced Global Studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, to promote the development of research on the Middle East both in Japan and worldwide. The Sultan Qaboos Chair of Middle Eastern Studies (Sponsored Program), funded by the Sultanate of Oman, was inaugurated at the same time and was attached to UTCMES. The program staff includes a professor and an associate professor from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as well as a project associate professor and a project research associate.

The Center collaborates with researchers of the Middle East from both Japan and abroad to promote research on the Middle East through hosting seminars and symposiums. In addition, the Center works together with Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, as well as with the Chairs of other Sultanate-funded programs in universities worldwide, to coordinate joint research projects with key research institutions globally. Program staff also give lectures and seminars on the Middle East at the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
