Science and Technology Studies Course

In this course, we aim to equip students with the ability to actively analyse and consider the issues that arise from science and technology in contemporary society, based on a broad understanding across the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. We assess the role of science and technology from historical, philosophical, ethical and sociological perspectives, and discuss the current and future roles that science and technology should play in our society to continue to benefit our lives. Areas of study include the History of Science and Technology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, Science and Technology Studies, and Studies in Applied Ethics.

There are also other courses run by staff both in and out of the department, allowing students to earn course credits from across virtually all disciplines. We do however stipulate a course in languages (English, German, French, etc) and in natural sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Cognitive Science, etc.), and emphasise the importance of a basic working knowledge of languages and the natural sciences. Students must also complete a graduation thesis in which their ability to assimilate and summarise their coursework or research is assessed.
