Contemporary Thought and Philosophy

Modern society has become increasingly complex, and is facing various obstacles. What is now needed is a 'philosophical mind' that is able to intellectualize topics from both a fundamental and comprehensive point of view, and then to take action. In order to accommodate such demands of modern society, this course does not limit itself to the exploration of philosophy in a specialized, narrow sense, but deals with a liberal and broad-based quest, based on interactions with the variety of realities across the world and the vast amounts of intellectual resources that contemporary thought and philosophy have to offer. By utilizing the philosophical legacy that transcends the boundaries of Eastern and Western thought and by building on the achievements of the humanities and social sciences, the course aims to question phenomena of contemporary life and society from the roots of human existence, such as knowledge and behaviour, language and communication, nations and history, and ethics and religion.

In addition, the course aims to equip students with the philosophical mind to deal with the depth and breadth of challenges of contemporary society through developing both the public commitment and critical thinking.
