Comparative Literature and Arts
The Comparative Literature and Arts Course offers an environment for students to engage themselves in depth with both the literature and the arts, as well as the cultural research that lies at their foundations. We believe that the concept of “comparative” is multidimensional, crossing the boundaries of culture and genre.
In more concrete terms, there is a focus on the analysis of the relationship between influence and receptiveness of literature and the arts; comparative discussions of similar yet independent cultural phenomena; historical examinations of the exchanges, negotiations and conflicts between multiple cultures; and the formulation of theories on intercultural understanding. Importance is placed on an empirical and historical approach to the analysis of a work, be it a piece of literature or art.
Another defining characteristic of this course is the permeability of the divisions between genres, such as between literature and the arts or literature and music, thus offering opportunities for students to be exposed to various forms of literature and art. Fields of research include post-modern literature, fine art (painting, photography, etc.), music, and film, as well as including research of subcultures.
Above all, the course places great emphasis on the careful instruction of students, exploring their individual interests in depth and appropriately broadening them to guide them through to their graduation theses.
