Location

The Komaba Health Service Center is located to the left of the Main Gate.

Here, you have access to consultations and treatments with specialists across internal medicine, psychiatry, orthopedics, dermatology and dentistry, except on weekends and public holidays. (Psychiatry and Dentistry require prior appointments. For details, please see the section below under Health Consultations and Consultation Hours). For ailments such as the common cold, it is highly likely to be less costly than other medical facilities (health insurance cannot be used).

In addition, consultations with an ENT (eyes, nose, throat) specialist are available in the Hongo Health Center.

Regular health examinations

All students are required to have a regular health examination (abdominal X-ray, physical measurements etc.) once a year in spring. We cannot issue any medical certificates necessary for job or scholarship applications to those who do not attend. The results of the examination will be recorded on your Health Notebook, so please bring it with you.

Students at the College of Arts and Sciences will have their health examinations at the Komaba Health Center (we cannot offer health examinations to those students at the Hongo Health Center).

This health examination is an important opportunity to understand the state of your health, so please ensure to attend as a responsible member of the university. The results of the examination would be recorded on your Health Notebook so as to form a basis of your future plans to maintain your physical and mental health. Please keep your Health Notebook safe, as it is an important record for the future.

Mental Health Care and Consultation

At the Health Service Center, specialists in psychiatry are on hand to provide treatment and consultations to all students regarding their mental health.

University life is very different to that during school. While on the one hand there is an increase in freedom such as fewer compulsory classes, more self-selected courses, or increased choice of clubs, it leads on the other hand to an increasingly irregular lifestyle, such as staying up late more often or missing class. This risk seems to be higher in those who move away from their parents and start living alone. In some cases, it proves to be too difficult to get the necessary credits to progress in the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences, and some students may be forced to repeat the year, or with failing attendance be forced to leave the university. Human relationships also tend to become more complicated, including sexual relationships. Furthermore, graduate students have to experience a completely different lifestyle again, as they must set their own goals, achieve them in a self-directed manner, and behave responsibly as an adult in the laboratory.

Under such stresses, many students increasingly face mental problems such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, isolation, excessive drinking, etc. In such times, the Psychiatry team at the Health Service Center are always be open to listen to you.
