【要旨】
Today, we can no longer assume that there are actually humans on the other side of news stories, photos, or even video chats. We are surrounded by human-like technologies, and the kinds of relationships that we could previously only have with other human beings can now be had with machines. Yet curiously, we often think about technologies as servants or even slaves. This viewpoint is at the heart of modern fears about the replacement of human beings by advanced AI.
What other ways might humans relate to machines?
The "machine as slave" viewpoint has its roots in the US of the 1950s in the science of cybernetics, but cybernetics was reinterpreted when it arrived in Japan, giving rise to other ways for researchers to imagine human-machine relationships. I discuss these histories, and offer a typology of relationships that will help us think beyond slavery in the age of AI.
