Chair: Dr Hiroyuki Ukeda and Dr Isabelle Duijvesteyn
This panel focuses on the origins of the academic discipline of
International Relations (IR) in the West (mainly Britain) and in Japan,
showing a global interconnection of racialized international theories.
Specifically, it will discuss how Western and Japanese IRs similarly sprang
from an imperial frontier, colonial rule and racism. It also considers the
implications that the amnesia of such racial and colonial roots of the
discipline has for the present.
